Wakefield Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, just off Route 128, is another popular gathering place for residents and commuters. It is a relatively large lake that is used by windsurfers, picnickers, walkers, joggers, and inline skaters. At one end of the lake is the town square and park, at the other end is Comverse, an office complex for high-tech firms. The lake is surrounded by sidewalks and roads. This area is best visited on a Sunday, when traffic is lighter and vendors often surround the town square selling ice cream and other refreshments.
To get to Lake Quannapowitt, get on Rte. 128 and look for the Comverse Color Splash logo around Exit 40. Take the Wakefield exit (Exit 39). Head south toward Wakefield. Your first left will take you to the Comverse complex parking lot. Parking is also available along Main Street on the east side of the lake. Most of the lake is surrounded by a smooth sidewalk that has regular seams. These can be annoying, so if traffic is light, stick to the road, where there is less pedestrian traffic and you can gather more speed if you are careful. The best skating is at the north end of the lake in the Comverse parking lots. The breeze off the lake cools you, and the open space gives you a variety of skating options. Copyright ©2000-2003 |
