Providence, Rhode Island The East Bay Bike path is one of the highlights of a trip to Providence. If you have an interest in nature, history, and physical fitness, check this path out. The path, recently constructed along an out-of-service railroad track, begins in Riverside (East Providence) and winds its way through marsh land and the quaint New England communities of Barrington, Warren, and Bristol. Along the way, you are greeted by a vast range of sights. From the swans at Riverside’s “Swan Corner” to the migrating herons and egrets that nest in the tidal pools, there is an exciting variety of wildlife. You’ll also see majestic tankers from around the world and fabulous sunsets over the vibrant city of Providence. The path winds its way past the back porches of historic Providence residences, restaurants, and cafes. At Colt State Park where the trail ends, skaters can enjoy a panoramic view of Narragansett Bay. On a clear day you can see all the way to Newport, Rhode Island. Note that pedestrians walk on the left side of the trail.You’ll have to trade your sandals or sneakers for your skates as the park has recently imposed restrictions on skating. The park has restrooms and picnic areas where you can eat your lunch. (There is no restaurant in the park.) For more information on the park, call (401) 253-7482. The East Bay Bike Path crosses a total of 49 streets in its 10 miles, so be prepared to stop. Although an hour drive from Boston, the skating you’ll get and the sights you will see are well worth the trip. The easiest way to the East Bay Bicycle Path is to take the Riverside exit (Exit 4) off Rte. 195 east, which is 1 mile east of the 95/195 split in Providence. Bear right off the exit and look for the parking lots on the right. The path is also accessible from the many parking lots that are along Rte. 114, which the path follows.
