The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University offers one of the most scenic skates
in Boston. The area covers 265 acres and is a beautifully maintained preserve
of over 7,000 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants used for scientific study.
Each plant is labeled with its scientific name, common name, country of origin,
and an accession number that links the plant to a computer-stored record.
To get to the Arboretum using the T, take the Orange Line to the Forest Hills Station. (Note that wearing skates on the T is not allowed.) The Arboretum’s Forest Hills Gate is a two-block walk northeast along the Arborway (Rte. 203). To get to the Arboretum, walk or skate five blocks south along Centre Street to where it intersects with the Arborway. The Arboretum will be on your left. To get to the Arboretum by car from downtown Boston, take Storrow Drive to the Fenway/Park Drive exit. Follow signs to the Riverway, which becomes the Jamaicaway and then the Arborway. If you are coming from Rte. 128, exit to Rte. 9 and head east seven miles to the Riverway. Turn right and follow the signs. The Riverway will become the Jamaicaway and then the Arborway. Parking is available along the Arborway and along the perimeter of the Arboretum.
Limited parking is also available inside the main gate on weekdays between
8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. The phone number is 617-524-1717.
